To give you a sense of the attractive range of Appletons' wool colours, please click on the button below. This will take you to a page where you will see a representation of each of the 421 shades. We do stress that this is for guidance only due to the difficulties associated with varying computers and monitors and that the only certain way accurately to view the shades is to obtain a shade swatch.
We specialise in Appletons crewel and tapestry wools. These are the original embroidery wools, chosen by artists such as William Morris and the choice of discerning embroiderers across the world. They have been spun and dyed in England to traditional colour recipes for over 150 years, using pure new British wool. And now their mellow colours are used exclusively in One Off Needlepoint kits designed by talented Wendy Hope-Falkner which we stock and sell.
Appleton wools are of the same quality as those used in top grade furniture coverings. They are hard wearing, moth-proofed and extremely durable. Tapestries made from Appletons wools last for generations.
The complete range is 421 colours that are always in stock, available in either crewel (2-ply) or in tapestry (4-ply) and in hanks or skeins. To facilitate the setup of your project we recommend that you always select your colour shades from a shade swatch to ensure accuracy. You may well wish to purchase a boxed or unboxed colour swatch to keep for permanent reference.
2-ply Crewel wool is supplied in hanks of 180 metres and skeins of 25 metres. 4-ply Tapestry wool hanks are 55 metres long and skeins 10 metres, (lengths are approximate).
