This geometric mosaic was discovered in Lincolnshire by Abraham de la Pryme in 1699 and was recovered for preservation as there were concerns over security. An anxious remark by George Stovin who first reported the 1747 discovery at Winterton helps to explain the high priority placed on mosaics and highlights their vulnerability:

“It is certainly the most curious peece of antiquity that ever was found in this county, and I wish you could see it, for [I] am affraid the country people will deface it”.

Information and images of mosaics were published in Vetusta Monumenta which made clear how antiquaries came to realise the crucial importance of illustration. The one surviving room of Roxby villa has been measured at 10.6 square meters, making it 'one of the largest rooms in a villa in Britain'. The Roxby mosaics were created by itinerant groups of artisans, and may be linked to others known in the region and the province of Britannia as a whole. Neighbouring examples have been removed for displayin museums but the Roxby one was left in situ, reburied and remains there still. So, again, in stitching this project, you bring a hidden gem back to life.

All the Sussex Stitches mosaic inspired kits use Zweigart 10hpi canvas, printed by Deightons, with a colour key in the margin and Appleton’s wool. The finished projects can be made up into cushions or framed for display.

Finished size 40cm x 40cm (15.5" x 15.5").
