The Box and Crosses design is inspired by one of the famous mosaics at Fishbourne Roman Palace, a world class Roman site in the UK. That there were Roman remains was known from the nineteenth century but the extent of the site was not discovered until an excavation in the 1960s by Barry Cunliffe. This revealed the largest domestic building north of the Alps, believed to be the home of the British King Togidubnus. This remarkable complex represented a vivid and impressive demonstration of Roman style designed to contrast with the more modest indigenous buildings.  The original black and white geometric mosaics were created by craftsmen probably brought over from Rome and will have been a striking expression of wealth and privilege. This mosaic was just 18 inches below the surface when found, and the only damage to it seems to be just ordinary wear and tear, as small areas in the north and south panels have been patched. Mosaics were made of individual pieces called tesserae cut from local stones. Here, chalk and shale are the components of this floor. At a later date this floor was divided by a wall and which regrettably impairs what would have been the original perspective. The needlepoint design seeks to give an impression of the beauty of the wonderful original.

All the Sussex Stitches mosaic inspired kits use Zweigart 10hpi canvas, printed by Deightons, with a colour key in the margin and Appleton’s wool. The finished projects can be made up into cushions or framed for display.

Finished size 40cm x 40cm (16" x 16").
