While it is possible to visit the Fishbourne mosaics, sadly that is not possible with many of some of the finest of British mosaics examples.  Wellow, regrettably, falls into this category. Under the centuries of Roman influence, numerous very large and luxuriously appointed villas were built and intricate extensive mosaics were a testament to the wealth and cultural interests of the owners. Over the intervening years, the abandoned villas crumbled and their glorious floors were buried. Ploughing often revealed remains and enthusiastic antiquarians uncovered them, sadly with the frequent result that the exposed pavements were lost to weathering and breaking up by souvenir hunters. Luckily, some were recorded in detailed hand drawings which sometimes are the only record of the lost masterpieces. This is the case with Wellow in Somerset where a Roman mosaic was discovered in 1685 and recorded by John Aubrey. A second mosaic floor was discovered in 1737. In 1823 it was recorded by John Skinner in exquisite detail but tragically the floor was subsequently damaged and is now lost. In stitching the Wellow canvas, there is the satisfaction of resurrecting a portion of this lost chef d’oeuvre.

All the Sussex Stitches mosaic inspired kits use Zweigart 10hpi canvas, printed by Deightons, with a colour key in the margin and Appleton’s wool. The finished projects can be made up into cushions or framed for display.

Finished size 38cm x 38cm (15" x 15").
